Social Exclusion due to Race or Ethnicity in Latin America: What do we know?
Very few studies provide careful empirical evidence on the role of a person?s race or ethnic background in accounting for social exclusion, poverty, and inequality in the Region due to insufficient data. The subject remains almost taboo in many countries and thus information on race or ethnicity is not regularly collected in household surveys or censuses. This note presents results of two studies conducted by the IDB to examine the socioeconomic status of different ethnic and racial groups in Guatemala, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, four of the few countries where ethnicity or race can be inferred from the language spoken (Guatemala, Bolivia and Peru) or individual's self-identification.
