This book presents a comparative analysis of the main characteristics and recent evolution of secondary education in Western Europe and the United States, with particular reference to the cases of Germany, France and Sweden, as well as the view of outstanding education policymakers and specialists from Latin America. Case studies of educational development in Barbados, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay are included, with particular attention paid to the nature of recent education reforms and the relationships between the education system and social stratification.

The book also looks closely at a series of key education issues such as the role of educators, education for indigenous peoples, gender impacts of secondary education reforms and the contribution of private education. The Ministers of Education of Brazil and Chile offer their vision of the challenges facing ongoing reforms, and the president of the IDB explains the role of secondary education in development.
