The Education, Science and Technology Subdepartment of the Sustainable Development Department issued in 2006 the publication: Education, Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Statistical Compendium of Indicators.

This publication represents a first step in positioning the Inter-American Development Bank as a focal point of information on knowledge-related activities in its borrowing member countries. It presents in a consolidated way a set of available and internationally comparable indicators that map the perform-ance of Latin America and the Caribbean countries in the three most important areas of the emerging knowledge economy : education, science and technology (S&T), and information and communication technology (ICT).

The publication reviews the progress made in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in the last decade, benchmark their performance against a selection of more advanced countries and China; it highlights future challenges to bridge the knowledge gaps, upgrade skills and increase innovation and competitiveness.

As an initial endeavor aiming at increasing the availability of knowledge-related indicators for the countries of the region this publication also points out to the need to improve the statistical systems required to develop such indicators in order to better inform both national policy making and the Bank operations in the countries.
