Higher Education and Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean: Responding to Expansion and Diversification

This seminar examined how the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are responding to the increased enrollment levels and diversification that have characterized higher education in recent years. The core issues reviewed were evaluation and accreditation systems, new modalities for higher education?with special emphasis on non-university institutions, distance education, and use of the Internet?and initiatives to bring universities and scientific research institutes closer to the productive sector. Lessons learned from a number of widely recognized programs were presented, along with best practices from different countries, including Brazil, El Salvador, Uruguay, and Venezuela. An overview of recent trends in higher education in the Americas rounded out the seminar.
