By Karen Macours, Nayra Bello, Alain de Janvry, Ruben Echeverrķa, Elisabeth Sadoulet (08/02, RUR-108, Es)
This technical paper brings together two shorter
studies pertaining to access to land as a tool for promoting rural development.
One of the papers is written by Ruben G. Echeverrķa and Nayra Bello O?Shanahan
and underlines the importance of land access as one of the key elements to any
strategy for rural poverty reduction, describes the Bank?s experience in the
financing of land projects, and makes suggestions regarding possible areas
where actions could be taken to improve land access. The second paper, written
by Alain de Janvry, Karen Macours and Elisabeth Sadoulet, reviews land renting
or leasing in depth as an option to improve access and to promote dynamic land
markets. An analysis of the experience in the Dominican Republic is also
presented, making comparisons with other countries in the region and areas in
Asia, the United States and Europe.
