Reducing Poverty and Social Inequity in Latin America and the Caribbean: The IDB in Action
By Poverty and Inequality Unit (11/01, En, Es)
This document highlights information on the activities of the Inter-American Development Bank designed to help reduce poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean. Focusing on the 2000-01 period, it surveys Bank lending operations designed to fight poverty and enhance social equity, with emphasis on recently approved projects with innovative components. It also surveys a broad range of poverty-related non-lending activities carried out by the Bank over the past two years. These various Bank activities are discussed in the context of an overall framework for poverty reduction in the region, suggested specific actions in key areas of emphasis related to combating poverty, and the Bank?s evolving institutional strategy.
The document was prepared by a team in the Poverty and Inequality Unit of the Bank's Sustainable Development Department under the overall direction of Nora Lustig, Senior Advisor and Chief of the unit. The team consisted of Omar Arias, Robert Ayres, Cesar Bouillon, Nora Lustig, Jose Antonio Mejia and Gustavo Yamada. Editorial assistance was provided by Eliana Villagomez. Much of the discussion in the document draws upon the report entitled "Poverty Reduction and Promotion of Social Equity: Report on Activities in the Year 2000 and an Action Plan in the Areas of Special Emphasis," which was prepared by Gustavo Yamada and Omar Arias and reviewed by the Policy and Evaluation Committee of the Bank?s Executive Board in July, 2001.
