This first edition of the Microenterprise Development Review examines the growing integration of microfinance and mainstream private sector finance. As described in the Review, the microfinance industry is rapidly acquiring some of the positive characteristics and methodologies of professional banking while adopting to an increasingly competitive environment. At the same time, conventional financial institutions and investors are taking an increasing interest in microfinance. With them they bring valuable experience as well as requirements of professionalism and efficiency. This meeting of microfinance and the conventional private sector finance community holds the promise of greater outreach and range of financial services for microentrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean.
