Credit guarantee funds in Latin America back more than US$ 4.7 billion in loans to micro, small and medium enterprises. The regulation and supervision of these guarantee funds, their profesional management and the good economic performance of most of the region's countries have been key factors in the growth of the funds in the past several years. However, the additionality of credit guarantee funds to credit access has yet to be proven. This publication examines a broad range of experiences in eight countries, the results obtained and the factors that were critical for the growth of credit guarantee funds in these countries.
