In the first article, Glenn Westley, Microfinance Senior Advisor in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Division at the Inter American Development Bank, reflects on the outreach of Village Banking in Latin America. The article describes the main features of the Village Banking programs in the region and presents the lessons learned from four of the leading Latin American Village Banking institutions. The article concludes with a number of policy recommendations for the MFIs interested in Village Banking. This article is based on an in-depth working paper by the same author.

In the second article, Juan Buchenau, lead rural and microfinance specialist at Frontier Finance International, narrates step by step Financiera Calpiá?s experience, as the pioneering entity of the IMI network in Latin America, to put it?s remittance program into practice. The article goes through the different phases of design, implementation and lessons learned and concludes with a mention of new areas for future action in the intersection of microfinance and remittances.
