Micro Enterprise, Development Review Vol.4 No.2
By SDS/MSM (01/02, En, Es)
This issue of the Microenterprise Development Review examines three mergers involving microfinance institutions in Paraguay, Nicaragua and Bolivia (El Comercio, Confia and Eco Futuro, respectively). Mergers have so far been rare occurences in the microfinance industry, but they may become more common in the future given the important benefits associated with economies of scale in the financial services industry. However, as the experiences of Eco Futuro, Confia and El Comercio demonstrate, merging is far from simple. There are plenty of challenges that have to be overcome and plenty of things that can go wrong. In the end, only one of the three mergers can be characterized as an unqualified success.
