The first article of this issue of the Microenterprise Development Review examines some of the crucial challenges confronting Latin American credit unions -a major source of microfinance in the region- as they try become strong and dynamic financial institutions. These challenges include operational inefficiencies, a lack of balanced and competitive services, structural governance problems, and the issues of consolidation and formal supervision.
The second article examines how credit bureaus can enhance the flow of credit to the microenterprise sector. It explores how credit bureaus operate, the information they contain, and the challenges involved in extending the benefits of a credit bureau system to the microenterprise sector.
