Seminar Rationale and Objectives

Over the past five years, the severity and extent of crises that have plagued international financial markets have directed attention to developing suitable reform strategies to enhance the global financial infrastructure. Improving accounting and financial disclosure through the development and implementation of standards for Accounting and Auditing is viewed as a key instrument to support the development of a stable global financial environment. The Seminar presented IFAD's vision for improving financial reporting and auditing practices through the implementation of international standards, discussed the development of Country Action Programs, and highlighted lessons learnt thus far. It also served as a forum to discuss the process of implementation and highlight the role that could be played by the various entities in this process. The seminar was intended for senior officers from private and public sector institutions in the region, including regulatory agencies, standard-setting bodies, finance ministries, professional accounting bodies, auditing firms, investors and public companies.
