Análisis regional de la situación de la zona marina costera centroamericana
By José Joaquín Rodríguez, Néstor José Windevoxhel (10/98, ENV-121, En, Es)
In response to the growing interest in coastal areas and marine resources, the Bank began the process of developing a sector strategy. This document (available only in Spanish) is part of the background papers commissioned to serve as the basis for the development of the strategy. The paper's introductory section provides an overview of Central America's coastal zone, its importance and the role of the Bank in integrated coastal management. The paper also includes a regional analysis of biophysical, demographic and socioeconomic conditions as well as a discussion of protected areas. A section on the regional framework for integrated coastal management discusses such topics as the legal issues involved, the tools available, the institutional framework and regional policies. In addition to basic and advanced recommendations, the report includes technical notes detailing the situation in each one of the seven Central American countries and annexes detailing regional initiatives and international treaties.
