NGO Seminar - Sustainable Tourism

As part of an ongoing commitment to the NGO community, the Bank is organizing a series of NGO Seminars. The first of these took place in March on the Environment Policy, the second on July 13th on the topic of infrastructure and the environment and the third took place on September 21st, 2004 on the subject of sustainable tourism and the environment. The rationale for these events is to establish basis of understanding and clarify perspectives on the nature and scale of environmental issues related to Bank operations to help inform the development of the IDB?s new environment policy.

The purpose of this last seminar ?Orienting Tourism Development to Achieve Sustainability Outcomes in Latin America and the Caribbean? was to identify ways in which tourism development can directly contribute to environmental sustainability and conservation of natural ecosystems. A series of panel presentations provided both an overview of the thematic area and also addressed areas of responsible best practice and emerging issues for concern and involvement.
