Situation and Lines of Action

Antigua, Guatemala
April 3-5, 2002

Workshop Synopsis

The workshop is a joint effort of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In this workshop, the discussion centered on the main issues facing the coffee sector in Central America.

This initiative is part of the response to requests by several Central America governments for assistance in addressing the effects that the current crisis is having on their economies. A discussion document was prepared as the background for discussion of the main issues facing the coffee sector in Central America. This paper attempts to define the nature and magnitude of the crisis and delineate possible strategies to ameliorate its effects within the framework of a competitive transition for the sector and development of the rural economy more broadly. The discussion paper was intended as an input to the discussion in the workshop and does not represent a statement of policy of the sponsoring institutions.

In this site you will find the discussion document, the workshop's agenda, a list of participants, and the presentations made during the workshop (in their original language).
