RS-T1048 : Analysis of the Impact of CAFTA on Rural Households in Central America
| Project Description: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-5) have completed negotiations with the United States to establish the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The agreement will affect rural households in these countries in multiple ways and present a number of challenges and opportunities. As such, it is important that the CA-5 countries, with the support of the IDB and Sida, develop strategies to address the issues raised by CAFTA both in the short- and long-term. Doing so requires that countries and donors adjust their project portfolios to meet new challenges facing rural households as a result of the agreement. For example, in a number of Central American countries IDB-financed rural development projects are in execution and employ demand-driven funds. Such funds could be channeled to assist rural households in taking advantage of a new opportunity presented by CAFTA. |
