COMPARTIR Association
Compartir has developed a community development strategy that
aims to prevent children from seeking the streets in the first place.
By strengthening families, schools and communities, the organization's
philosophy is to empower the community in the community.
Compartir has developed the following programs and activities:
- Community Libraries. Many Honduran schools in poor communities
have scarce reading materials and limited resources. School libraries
are relatively non-existent, and many children are deprived of
the cultural and recreational experience of reading books. For
these reasons, Compartir decided to build and staff a library
in the community of Villanueva, Tegucigalpa. The library carries
out a variety of activities, including literacy support, peer
tutoring, book clubs, reading activities, games, and book lending.
After the daily school period is over, the library offers children
a place to go and learn -a sound alternative to the streets.
- Community Round Tables. Every community needs a safe
and neutral space to communicate and exchange information among
its members. Regularly, Compartir gathers teachers, parents, health
professionals, community organizers and children for dialogue
exchanges. Each dialogue covers a topic that is relevant to the
reality of the community and its children. All issues are discussed
candidly, and most importantly, actions are planned and implemented
collectively.
- Family Outreach. Since family breakdown is a primary
reason why children seek the streets, outreach to families has
become an important component of Compartir's preventive work.
Family outreach takes place through a series of visits by a counselor
to a family facing difficult circumstances. During their conversations,
the counselor encourages the family to articulate difficulties,
focusing attention on the issues that can cause children to abandon
the home. Overall, this form of personalized outreach empowers
the family to communicate, solve problems, cooperate and recognize
the needs and capabilities of all its members, particularly the
children.
