In
2005 the Office received the visit of outgoing IDB President Enrique
V. Iglesias in September and the first official visit to Japan of new
President Luis Alberto Moreno in late November. On both occasions,
the Office organized courtesy visits with top authorities of Japan's
Ministry of Finance, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC),
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Japan Business Federation.
President Moreno also met with Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
During these meetings, outgoing President Iglesias heard words of
sincere appreciation for his excellent contribution to development
in the LAC region and his work to enhance the Bank's relations with
Japan.
President Moreno took advantage of his visit with Prime Minister Koizumi
to propose a high-level conference of Japanese and LAC business leaders
to be held in Japan around the mid-July, with the purpose of exploring
ways to promote investment, trade, tourism and technology flows between
Japan and LAC, so as to promote private sector and infrastructure development
in the region. He also discussed areas to enhance future collaborative
efforts with the authorities of JBIC, JICA and Japan Business Federation. Both Presidents Iglesias and Moreno also held press conferences
with members of the Japanese and foreign media to discuss issues
relevant to the Bank, LAC and the international community. They also
held exchange meetings with the ambassadors of the Latin American
and Caribbean countries
in Japan. After Japan, President Moreno went on to the Republic of Korea, where
he met with President Roh Moo-Hyun, authorities such as the Ministry
of Finance and Economy, the Bank of Korea, Export-Import Bank of Korea,
business leaders and the LAC ambassadors.
