Jan. 9
Conference of the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF)
with the participation of the Japan International Development
Organization (JAIDO). Mr. Don Terry, Manager of MIF,
spoke about the promotion of Japanese direct investment in Latin
America through MIF. The conference was attended by Latin American
ambassadors in Japan, as well as by representatives of Japanese
manufacturing companies, trading houses, and consulting firms.
Jan. 23
IDB Dialogue. IDB Office in Japan welcomed Mr. Yukio
Sato, Vice Minister of the Ministry of International Trade and
Industry (MITI), as the guest speaker for the third IDB
Dialogue. Mr. Sato described the problems encountered by Japanese
corporations in their efforts to advance into Latin America.

Jan. 26
Silvio Yanagawa, Deputy Representative of IDB Office in
Japan, gave a presentation at a luncheon for the Japan
Center for International Finance on the activities of IDB
Office in Japan since its inception in September 1995.
Jan. 31
Yoshihisa Ueda represented IDB Office in Japan at the
non-regional government informal consulting meeting held
in Lisbon.

Feb. 2 - 16
Yoshihisa Ueda consulted with authorities of Central
American countries concerning their attendance at the Seminar
on Central America to be held on July 31 in Tokyo.
Feb. 9
Silvio Yanagawa assisted Mr. Carlos Magarinos, Secretary
of Industry of Argentina, in the project identification
with the Japan Productivity Center.
Feb. 18
The Deputy Governor of Goias State, Mr. Naphtali Alves
de Souza, visited IDB Office in Japan.
Yoshihisa Ueda made a presentation to members of the
Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).
Feb. 22
Yoshihisa Ueda made a presentation on the activities
of IDB Office in Japan to the Ministry of International Trade
and Industry (MITI) (see page 15).
Feb. 29
IDB Dialogue. Two ambassadors were invited as guest
speakers for this IDB Dialogue: His Excellency Ambassador
Juan Jose Amado III of Panama and His Excellency Ambassador
Manual Uribe of Mexico. They spoke on the future of the
Panal Canal, describing various plans for expanding the canal
and introducing an alternative land route.
