Investing
in Human Resource Development
With funding from the Japanese government, in 1991 the IDB established
a scholarship program for students from the Bank's borrowing member
countries wishing to pursue master's degree-level studies in development-related
disciplines. Scholarship recipients may attend accredited institutions
in any of the IDB's member countries, including Japanese universities
that offer graduate programs in English.
The Program requires that recipient students return to their countries
of origin for at least two years after graduation, so they can
apply their enhanced knowledge and skills toward helping accelerate
the social and economic development of their countries. By mid-2006,
the Program had awarded around 500 scholarships and has become
an important source for human resource development in the region,
particularly among the lowest income countries.
