X Hemispheric Meeting of the Poverty and Social Protection Network, November 2008

On November 6th and 7th, the Bank hosted the X Hemispheric Meeting of the Poverty and Social Protection Network. This year, the Dialogue’s main goal was to discuss the demand and supply of financial services in Latin America and the Caribbean for low-income groups. The event included discussions on (i) the characteristics of the demand for financial services, the evolution of provision of services and the impact of financial institutions and their products on poverty reduction schemes; (ii) conditional cash transfers and their linkage with financial inclusion issues, especially as more programs are expanding their services into the urban areas and thus exploring turning into banking schemes; and (iii) future challenges for the public and private sector in increasing their knowledge on financial inclusion issues. Participants included representatives from more than 24 member countries, as well as NGOs and private institutions, who presented innovative experiences implemented in other world regions targeted to children, youth and other vulnerable groups.
