| General Agenda |
Day I
|
| Opening: Disability
and Poverty Reduction: Including Disability
Into the Development Agenda. Experiences
from Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean |
| |
| Panel I: Challenges
and Actions Taken |
| To understand the
social phenomenon of disability, a detailed
look at current institutional policies
and processes of tackling exclusion
and disempowerment of PWDs should be
taken into consideration. Panel I will
share the views and experiences on the
challenges and actions taken in the
respective countries which aim to assist
with the integration of PWDs into the
economic, social and political arenas
in both Asia and LAC. |
| |
| Panel II: Steps
Towards Inclusion |
| When faced with the
challenge of incorporating PWDs into
the social and economic mainstream within
developing countries, a look at others
experience on strategic actions taken
to ensure maximum impact with minimum
resources, increases the chances of
success. Panel II takes a look at the
steps that have been taken to advance
towards the inclusion of PWDs into society
in both Asia and LAC, and what needs
to be done today to advance. |
| |
| Panel III: Experiences
of Inclusion and Stakeholders Initiatives |
| Including disability
into social and economic development
programs, that aims to reach an extensive
population, requires analysis of the
multiple sectors and complexity of social
exclusion. Disability intersects with
gender, ethnicity, age or religion,
for example, and its intricacy needs
to be acknowledged in order to plan
effective initiatives. A look at the
experience of inclusion and stakeholder
initiatives from Asia and LAC will be
examined in Panel III. |

Day II
|
| Panel I: Poverty
Reduction Strategies and Inclusion of Persons
with Disabilities |
| Poverty and disability are
both a cause and a consequence of the other.
However, social inclusion might become the
key for PWDs to exert the right to lead worthy
and productive lives. Panel I looks at how
PWDs themselves might become actors of such
significant changes through advocacy for inclusion
in poverty reduction strategies. |
| |
| Panel II: Development
Policies for Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities |
| As advocates for their right
to social participation, PWDs are now considering
different strategies not only to include disability
into the development agenda, but also to include
development issues into the disability agenda.
Panel II focuses on the skills of advocacy
required for including PWDs into development
policies. |
| |
| Panel III: Plenary
Session - Building Bridges Towards Inclusion
of Persons with Disabilities in Poverty Reduction
Strategies and Policies. |
| Inclusion in development
involves an array of stakeholders. Governmental
institutions, non-governmental organizations
and international agencies should act together
to find effective approaches for including
PWDs in poverty reduction strategies and existing
development programs which have the potential
to incorporate them. Panel III will look at
specific strategies to achieve this. |
| |
| Panel IV: Next Steps:
Follow-up for Advocacy for Inclusion of Persons
with Disabilities in Poverty Reduction Strategies
and Development Policies |
| As a concrete step towards
‘advocacy as a tool’ for social inclusion,
JP created a fund to support four non-governmental
organizations that propose a small project
to include PWDs in an existing development
project in their region. The basis and requirements
of this project will be discussed during Panel
IV. |
