The following operations were approved in recent weeks by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) and the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF):
Argentina
A $1 million MIF grant to establish a national network of commercial mediation and arbitration centers and to strengthen their institutional capacity.
Belize
An $11 million IDB loan to strengthen the tourism sector and to preserve and protect environmental and cultural assets.
Bolivia
A $1.2 million MIF grant to enhance the management capacity and competitiveness of small rural producers. An $840,000 MIF grant to consolidate insurance market operations and to strengthen the Office of Insurance Oversight.
Brazil A $51 million IDB loan to support a pilot program to accelerate self-sufficiency in settlements for families that have benefited from agrarian reform. A $1.55 million MIF grant to support a new regulatory framework for private health plans that will encourage greater efficiency and competition as well as consumer benefits. A $1,534,000 MIF grant for a trade union leadership program to be carried out by the Departa-mento Intersindical de Es-tatisticas e Estudos Sócio-Econômicos.
Chile
A $570,000 MIF grant to Inversiones para el Desarrollo S.A. of Chile to develop a model for microleasing that will benefit microenterprise and small businesses.
Colombia
An $850,000 MIF grant to strengthen the competitveness of microenterprises on the Atlantic coast.
Dominican Republic
A $22.3 million IDB loan to strengthen democratic governance through the modernization of the operations of the National Congress and the Office of the Comptroller General.
El Salvador
A $1.4 million MIF grant to Fondo de Inversión Social para el Desarrollo to promote the development of private and public sector linkages to ensure better provision of municipal services. An $870,000 MIF grant to Fundación para la Educación Integral to promote a sustainable market for technical assistance and training services for microenterprise. An $850,000 MIF grant to introduce mechanisms to facilitate and promote the development of microenterprises and small businesses. A $749,000 MIF grant to the Asociación Salvadoreña de Industriales to promote cleaner production processes.
Guyana
A $1.1 million MIF grant to help modernize the telecommunications and information services sector.
Honduras
A $14,580,000 loan from the Fund for Special Operations to promote efficiency and transparency in public sector procurement through modernizing and strengthening of state entities.
Mexico
A $300 million IDB loan to expand the supply of credit to small and medium-sized businesses and to enhance the competitiveness and technological capacity of the financial and business sectors. A $250 million IDB loan to help consolidate banking reform and strengthen the safety and soundness of the banking system. A $200 million IDB loan to continue financing the second phase of Mexico’s comprehensive labor market modernization. A $23 million IDB loan from ordinary capital and a syndicated loan of $113 million to support the development, construction, ownership, operation and maintenance of a 600-megawatt, natural gas-fueled, combined cycle power plant and related facilities in the municipality of San Luis de la Paz in the state of Guana-juato.
Nicaragua
A $5,670,000 loan from the Fund for Special Operations to strengthen institutional capacity and improve basic services of the municipality of Managua.
Panama
A $20.3 million IDB loan from ordinary capital and a $39.5 million syndicated loan to igc/eri Pan Am Thermal Generating Limited to support the development, ownership, and operation of a power project developed under a new regulatory framework.
Paraguay
A $40 million IDB loan to support a program to improve quality and equity in basic education throughout the country through investments in teacher training, infrastructure, classroom materials and equipment, and provide resources for pioneering bilingual instruction that will benefit speakers of Guaraní. A $10 million IDB loan for a program to raise the income of small farmers through the use of new technologies for the production of fruits and vegetables and through new marketing approaches. A $6 million IDB loan to assist the government in modernizing state agencies responsible for fiscal management.
Suriname
A $10.3 million IDB loan to support a program to improve living conditions, economic opportunities and social well-being for the country’s poorest communities.
Trinidad and Tobago
A $1.86 million MIF grant to integrate the supervision of insurance companies, pension plans, and banking institutions with the goal of making them more competitive.
Uruguay
A $5 million IIC loan to Udeman S.A. for the construction and operation of a multipurpose bus terminal in the city of Salto.
Regional
A $9.4 million MIF contingency line of credit and $600,000 in grants to support recovery and sustainability of microenterprise and microfinance institutions that suffer fromthe effects of natural disasters. A total of $8 million in MIF grants to institutions that win a competition for proposals for innovations in microenterprise. A $1.4 million MIF grant to train energy regulators in Argentina and Brazil.
