The
circus
If we believe
that weaving tapestries was a way for Parra to express the "bright
side of life," according to her own words, then The Circus
encapsulates that fleeting, joyful feeling in a life otherwise
characterized by struggle, depression and despair. Parra was familiar
with circus life. Since the early days of her adolescence she
and her brothers and sisters helped their family to make ends
meet by singing for the traveling circuses that visited her province.
At a certain point she even considered joining one. With the déjà
vu of nostalgia, this work alludes to the happiness that circus
people seem to have.
