"On the occasion of the IDB’s annual meeting in Cartagena, Colombia, in 1998, the IDB Cultural Center sponsored a painting contest for artists under 40 years of age. Among the winners of two IDB Cultural Center Acquisition Prizes was Franco, a mid-career artist from the southern part of Colombia, whose work demonstrated both a painterly craft and a lyric, abstract approach to a classic theme. Franco’s work evinces the enduring traditions of painting, and shows his cautious stance toward more-fashionable art world trends embraced by Colombia’s younger generations."
