Byron Lombardo
Mejía (Tegucigalpa, 1978)
Espacios Interiores (Interior Spaces), oil on canvas, 2000
"Mejía
is a member of the youngest generation of Honduran painters. Last
year, during the selection of the Honduran representation
for the Central American Biennial held in Costa Rica, his
work caught the attention of experts including the IDB
Cultural Center Curator, who recommended that the centers
Acquisition Committee consider his work for possible purchase.
This work is a diptych (two-panel) piece, and although apparently
abstract, it is indeed figurative. The pictorial "space" echoes the
human interior, that today seems more than ever devoid of rationality
and compassion. "These spaces," says the artist, "are the habitat
of souls possessed by madness."

Angel, Curator, IDB Cultural Center
