A sea lion on a Galápagos Island beach pays scant attention to a group of tourists invading his domain. One of the world's premier ecotourist destinations, the Galápagos attracts 60,000 visitors annually. More would come, but the government has imposed restrictions to protect the fragile ecosystems. The IDB is funding a major program on the archipelago to implement a marine management plan, stem the spread of introduced species, and strengthen local institutions and municipalities.
