ECOTOURISM

Each evening, flocks of scarlet ibises turn trees a brilliant red as they come to roost in Trinidad’s Caroni Lagoon National Park and Bird Sanctuary. The birds are the prime attraction for boatloads of tourists visiting this 5,611-hectare park 30 minutes from the capital of Port of Spain. An IDB loan helped to finance a conservation program for the park and a new tourist center that includes a 50-seat auditorium, an observation tower, a boardwalk trail, and an ibis viewing platform near a roosting area.
