ECOTOURISM

For half of the year, nearly all of the land between Brazil's Japurá and Solimões rivers disappears under several meters of Amazon River water. In the 1980s, a group of far-sighted individuals succeeded in getting a large portion of this area declared the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve. With its remarkable hydraulic regime and unique wildlife, the reserve became a big draw for Brazilian and international scientists. Now, the reserve is welcoming tourists to a "floating hotel," which is used as a base for plying forest paths by dugout canoes. Mamirauá received funding through the IDB-financed National Environmental Program. For more information, go to www.cnpq.br/mamiraua or e-mail mamiraua@pop-tefe.rnp.br
