Masterpieces of the far north

Sophisticated art from a harsh land

Old Woman Legend
Lucassie Echalook
Inukjuak

"According to Inuit legend, an old woman was left behind by her family to die. Attacked by a bear, the woman resourcefully put her glove on the end of her cane and thrust it down the bear’s throat, suffocating it. The theme has been resolved here with a complicated composition that evinces a great deal of ingenuity. The bear lies agonizing on its back in a contorted position on an undulating ground, which adds fluidity to the whole. Meanwhile the woman stands firm bearing (or supporting) the effort of her action. The artist has produced multiple angles that demand a great capacity to visualize and control the distinctive components from different points of view. The final image is interesting to the eye while magnifying the literary content of the story."

The Inuit too are making good use of Internet to transmit images of their works to potential buyers and marketing advisors thousands of miles south. The result is more feedback to the artists, and works that meet consumer demand.
