Masterpieces of the far north

Sophisticated art from a harsh land

Bird Shaman
By Kiawak Ashoona
Cape Dorset

"One of the largest and stronger pieces in the show, "Bird Shaman" represents a defining belief in Inuit culture: The capacity of the wise man to transform himself into a animal, in this case a bird, for the purposes of acquiring knowledge. The figure is depicted at the moment of metamorphosis, its posture resembling a bird ready to take flight."

The Inuit too are making good use of Internet to transmit images of their works to potential buyers and marketing advisors thousands of miles south. The result is more feedback to the artists, and works that meet consumer demand.
