Masterpieces of the far north

Sophisticated art from a harsh land

Drawing Out Evils
By David Ruben Piqtouken
Paulatuk and Toronto

"The title of this zoomorphic figure is just the beginning of a metaphor that tells us about a cultural tradition in which the wisdom of the shaman, or spiritual leader of the Inuit, has been replaced by other forms of life. Yet evil remains, leaving man unprotected and lost. The artist himself has written about this piece: "We must find ways to heal ourselves. The modern world has distorted our understanding of ourselves and of nature. Can we find the magic words that will expel the new evils inside?" Piqtouken voices a concern shared by many native communities of the Americas."

The Inuit too are making good use of Internet to transmit images of their works to potential buyers and marketing advisors thousands of miles south. The result is more feedback to the artists, and works that meet consumer demand.
