Masterpieces of the far north

Sophisticated art from a harsh land

Inuit Dentistry
By Bob Kussy
Kugluktuk

"Sometimes, although not frequently, humor provides inspiration for Inuit sculptors. Humor is indeed a part of Inuit daily life, and domestic life is one of the main themes of creativity. In this piece, a cartoon-like character has just pulled a tooth by tying it to a rock and dropping it. The practice may not be completely unknown in a society that has not yet completely adopted the trappings of Western civilization, including modern dentistry. The bone-like material selected for the carving (caribou antler) adds expressive reference to the subject."

The Inuit too are making good use of Internet to transmit images of their works to potential buyers and marketing advisors thousands of miles south. The result is more feedback to the artists, and works that meet consumer demand.
