Inuit
Dentistry
By Bob Kussy
Kugluktuk
"Sometimes,
although not frequently, humor provides inspiration for Inuit sculptors.
Humor is indeed a part of Inuit daily life, and domestic life is
one of the main themes of creativity. In this piece, a cartoon-like
character has just pulled a tooth by tying it to a rock and dropping
it. The practice may not be completely unknown in a society that
has not yet completely adopted the trappings of Western civilization,
including modern dentistry. The bone-like material selected for
the carving (caribou antler) adds expressive reference to the subject."
