Masterpieces of the far north

Sophisticated art from a harsh land

Drum Dancer
By Axangayu Shaa
Cape Dorset

"This piece is a balancing act in both the physical and artistic sense. The dancing shaman gravitates while beating the drum, allowing the artist to create a figure in which the volume seems to defy its own weight. Balance is achieved by resting the figure on just one foot in perfect equilibrium and graceful movement. The combination of stone and bone adds an interesting counterpoint in texture and shape. The delicacy of the effects of the Inuit garment and the transfixed expression of the face in a gesture suggesting enhanced shamanic power provide the final contrast where all elements are finely juxtaposed."

The Inuit too are making good use of Internet to transmit images of their works to potential buyers and marketing advisors thousands of miles south. The result is more feedback to the artists, and works that meet consumer demand.
