Cazumbá
Mask
(Mauro Gomes, 2001)
Brazil's Nordestinos,
the residents of the country's arid Northeast region, share many
traits that have emerged from the fusion of their Amerindian,
European and African cultures. For example, the half ox-half man
character called Cazumbá is part of the Boi-Bumba
celebration of Maranhão and other parts of Brazil´s
Northeast. The character, with its big ears, prominent nose and
colorful garb, is inspired by African traditions.
