DOUBLE DEBUT
When Paraguayan guitarist Berta Rojas left the stage at the IDB's Andrés Bello Auditorium in June to enthusiastic applause, she still had one more encore coming. Rojas, who has two CDs to her credit, is also interested in helping to boost the careers of aspiring young musicians. She has established an annual competition in her country's capital of Asunción for Paraguayan musicians under age 35. The winner will come to the United States in November to make a Washington, D.C., debut at the IDB.

SUPPORT FOR LATIN AMERICAN CINEMA
Most of the images projected onto big screens in Latin America are produced in Hollywood. What to do about this long-standing example of cultural globalization was the subject at a recent forum held in Rio de Janeiro that brought together European and Latin American cinematographers. According to participants, films produced in Latin America reach only a limited audience and earn limited profits despite that many are of high quality. Speaking at the forum, IDB President Enrique V. Iglesias pledged the Bank's support for programs to strengthen the region's film industry.

JUST FOR CLARINETS
They were all represented, from the E-flat piccolo to the B-flat bass. These lesser known siblings of the familiar clarinet were featured in an all-clarinet program of music by Venezuelan and Latin American composers at the IDB's Andrés Bello Auditorium in April. The featured star, Grammy Award-winning Paquito D'Rivera, was accompanied by the members of the Caracas Clarinet Quartet, a group of young Venezuelan musicians who were trained through their country's National Youth Symphony Orchestra.
