New solutions for education
NICARAGUA

The IDB approved a $9.4 million loan to lay the foundation for reforming the country's secondary school system.
The loan, the Bank's first for Nicaragua's education sector, will help the country to make use of alternative educational technologies through the establishment of pilot programs.
In one pilot program, 30 distance learning centers using video programs will be used to reach students in rural areas. Another pilot program will consist of self-teaching modules that will provide evening and weekend students with access to nontraditional educational tech- nology such as audiocassettes, videocassettes and Internet access. In addition, an experimental interactive radio program will be used to improve the quality of mathematics and Spanish instruction in grades five and six.

The program also includes incentives to encourage poor students to continue their education into the secondary level, measures to strengthen school autonomy and teacher training.

The IDB loan finances the first phase of an education investment program for Nicaragua that will lay the groundwork for further Bank investments in the sector in coordination with other international donors.
