The Winter Internship Program

The Inter-American Development Bank is an international financial institution created in 1959 to help accelerate the economic and social development of its member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Bank, whose headquarters are in Washington, D.C., is today a major source of external public financing for most of the countries of the Latin American region. The Bank is owned by its 46 member countries. Twenty-eight of these countries - known as the regional members - are in the Western Hemisphere, and 18 - known as the non-regional members - are in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The Bank, as an international organization, is committed to the principle of equal opportunity for all persons based solely on their individual merits, without any consideration as to their race, color, religion, sex or disability.

The Winter Internship Program

This winter the Bank expects to hire 12 Winter Interns from member countries that have vacations for two months or more in the winter time (from January to March).  The Interns will be hired for a period of two months.  The purpose of the Program is to provide an opportunity for university students at the graduate level to learn about the operations of the Bank, and to acquire work experience at the professional level through on-the-job training during their winter vacation before returning to their studies.

During the internship, the students are placed in one of the departments or units of the Bank and, to the extend possible, are given assignments relevant to their current studies.  Before the end of the winter, the departments and the interns must submit a brief report about their experience in the Bank and provide ideas and suggestions that can help improve the Program in future years.

Requirements

To be eligible for the IDB Winter Internship Program, the candidate must be:

  • A student, working towards a Master's or Doctor's Degree in an accredited university in a program in any one of the following areas: Social Sciences, Finance, Administration, Computer Sciences, Engineering, Law or Economics, who will still be pursuing postgraduate programs following the internship period.

The Selection Process

A preliminary selection of candidates is made within the Human Resources Department, based on the specific needs of the Departments or units in the Bank which have requested the placement of a Summer Intern. Finalists are then selected by the particular units where winter interns will be placed.

Only those selected for placement will be contacted by telephone. If students have not heard from us by mid-December, it will be reasonable to believe that all vacancies were filled and that we were not able to find a position for them. We ask applicants not to call our staff for information on their application status, as we cannot possibly give personal attention to each caller.

For students selected to participate in the Program who are not citizens or residents of the United States, the Bank will provide a written offer of employment in order that they may obtain any necessary working permit from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. It will be the responsibility of the student to obtain the necessary permit. If the student is unable to obtain said permit, the offer of employment will be voided.

Conditions of Employment

The Bank will determine the salary to be paid to the participants according to the regulations and criteria of its internal salary administration.  Winter Interns are also entitled to sick leave and occupational insurance for work related accidents or illnesses. The Bank does not provide medical insurance coverage for Winter Interns. Those selected for employment will be required to submit proof of medical insurance while working at the Bank.

The Bank does not pay transportation costs for students coming from outside the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area or from other countries for interviews and/or employment.

In view of the fact that the Winter  Internship Program is intended for students who are pursuing their postgraduate degree, participation in the program will not extend beyond 3 months.
