Bagunçaço Cultural Group
Bagunçaço is an organization that incorporates music and
other forms of artistic expression in the educational journey of
children from marginal areas. The group's strategy consists of organizing
these children into drum troops where they can participate, learn
and develop self-esteem.
Throughout Salvador, young people dream of participating in one of the city's world famous drum bands. A traditional African drum, however, can be very expensive. Thus, many children from popular classes grow up practicing on tin cans, barrels and other hollow-shaped objects that resemble percussion instruments.
Artistic expression through music serves as a vehicle to enhance children's understanding and appreciation of culture. At the same time, activities performed in a group allow for the development of social skills and solid bonds among children.
- Drumming on the Streets. All that is required to join Bagunçaço is
a tin can, a sense of rhythm and personal commitment. Children are responsible
for bringing tin cans that they usually find in the trash. Bagunçaço
then helps the child to work the shape of the can until it makes the
sound of a drum. Finally, using a rainbow of colors, the children decorate
their "cans".
- Sucatamania. "Sucatamania" or "Scrap-Mania" is one of Bagunçaço's
official drum troops. Sucatamania performs throughout Brazil. In fact,
the famous Salvadorian musician Wilson Café directs "Scrap-Mania". As
a volunteer, Café directs, writes music, and shares his musical expertise
with the children.
- Volunteerism. One of the principle ideas behind Bagunçaço is
giving back to your community. There are many other everyday heroes
like Wilson Café within Bagunçaço dedicating their time and skills to
the project. By providing technical assistance and mentoring these kids,
the volunteers are simply improving the quality of life of their own
communities.
