What Works in Honduras

To reinforce the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Honduras passed its own Child and Adolescent Code in 1996. This legal instrument promotes the integral protection and maximum recognition of children rights.

During the 1990s, Honduras experienced an increase in the number of children taking refuge in the streets. In October 1998, Hurricane Mitch devastated the country's infrastructure, complicating the seriousness of already existing socio-economic problems. After Mitch, the population of children seeking the streets has noticeably increased.

For the last decade, Casa Alianza and Compartir Association have consistently provided attention and protection to these children. These are their stories.
