EDUCATE YOURSELF!

  • Become familiar with the Don't Call Me Street Kid! Campaign
  • Read appropriate publications that discuss the street children issue. Take notice of reports about these children in the media.
  • Find out more about the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. How is your country guaranteeing the rights set out in this Convention?
  • Investigate governmental and non-governmental programs in your country that are working with the so- called "street children". Are they aware of this campaign?
  • Reflect on your own life your capabilities, opportunities, needs, hopes, and visions for the future. How would you feel if you were never given the opportunity to realize them?

BECOME ACTIVE!

  • Download and use the campaign toolkit to spread awareness and engage in discussions.
  • Organize local video dialogues Discuss the issue with children, friends, neighbors and community leaders.
  • Approach different public agencies. Ask representatives what policies or programs exist to ensure the healthy development and empowerment of children as well as the strengthening of families, schools and communities.
  • Write courteous letters expressing your concern to the government.
  • Use e-mail to spread the news about the campaign.

BECOME REALLY ACTIVE: VOLUNTEER !

  • Volunteer at an NGO, school or community center in your community that works with children and families.
  • Act as a mentor to a street child. Show you care! Get to know the child. Ask the child his/her name; why she/he chooses to spend time on the streets; and what are his/her dreams for the future.
  • Volunteer to hold community meetings where issues surrounding children at risk are Discussed. Ask the question: How does this situation affect our lives and communities? Construct action plans to address the situation of these kids!
