GENERAL DESCRIPTION:     This nonreimbursable technical
                         cooperation will contribute to the
                         maintenance of quality controls in urban
                         development that will minimize the
                         potential adverse impact on the
                         environment and achieve tourism
                         development in accordance to high-quality
                         standards.  The program provides for the:
                         (a) preparation of a diagnostic
                         assessment of the status of the tourism
                         organization plans, the progress achieved
                         and the existing institutional capacity
                         for follow-up of these plans; and
                         (b) revision and updating of the existing
                         organization plans, development of new
                         plans for the areas affected by new
                         investment and implementation of
                         institutional strengthening programs. 
                         The areas involved in the project are
                         Puerto Plata, Costa-Este, Juan Dolio-
                         Guayacanes and Samaná.

CONSULTANTS:             The Portuguese consulting firm Sociedade
                         Nacional de Empreendrimentos e
                         Desenvolvimento Económico has been
                         selected to carry out the consulting
                         activities under this project.
