GENERAL DESCRIPTION:    This program is designed to improve the standard of
                        living in Curitiba by providing better public trans-
                        port and additional facilities for users in low-income
                        areas.  

                        The five components of this program include:
                        (a) increasing capacity on the North-South corridor
                        by paving roads on bus routes along the corridor,
                        building new tube stations to speed up the boarding
                        and off-loading of passengers, and procuring
                        additional buses and units; (b) improving feeder
                        roads; (c) improving facilities for public transport
                        users, including user support centers and terminals;
                        (d) increasing traffic markings and road safety; and
                        (e) planning and monitoring public transport.

CONSULTANTS:            Consultants will be hired to help design and implement
                        a municipal traffic safety program; and to support the
                        modernization of the Prefectura Municipal de Curiti-
                        ba's information systems.

GOODS AND EQUIPMENT:    A variety of equipment will be purchased for installa-
                        tion in the six user support centers, which will
                        include offices and shops offering a wide range of
                        services.  Computer hardware and software will be
                        acquired to manage the public transportation bus
                        fleet, as well as to modernize and expand the capacity
                        of the geographic information system in managing urban
                        transport and traffic statistics.  Traffic control
                        equipment and traffic lights will also be purchased.

CIVIL WORKS:            The program will finance the following civil works:
                        (a) rehabilitation and paving of approximately 400
                        meters of downtown bus-route roads; (b) paving of
                        approximately 100 km of urban feeder roads; (c) con-
                        struction of two overpasses and redesign of three
                        intersections with interstate highways; (d) construct-
                        ion of five user support centers, each with an area of
                        some 2,500 square meters; and (e) road sign works.
