Using this Guide
The primary purpose of this Business Resource Guide is to provide information to businesses and
consultants interested in learning more about opportunities arising from Bank-financed projects
(including purchases made directly by the IDB). The guide also serves as a “refresher” resource
to those already familiar with the Bank.
Taking advantage of the many business opportunities available through the IDB can be a challenging
experience for newcomers. Companies and consultants that are successful in landing
business opportunities with the Bank take the time and effort to develop business and marketing
plans that identify comparative technical advantages and market niches. They look at both the
public and private sector lending windows of the Bank and determine in which of the 26 borrowing
member countries they are best able to work. While there is increasing standardization in the
procedures followed by the multilateral development banks, specific projects in developing
countries vary, and an understanding of how projects unfold on the ground is critical to success.
Today, the main source of business and procurement information regarding the IDB is the Bank’s
website. Step-by-step instructions on how to use the website and other sources
of information are found in this guide.
A series of tips that successful businesses and individuals have followed are set
out in the guide. Keep them in mind as you use it.
