SEMINARS 2001
LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN
IN THE DIGITAL WORLD:
DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTERNET AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho
Casa Amarilla Monday, 19 March—2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday, 20 March—9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The fact that Latin America is the world’s fastest-growing market of Internet users can be attributed in great part to the extensive telecommunications infrastructure upgrades and active market liberalization and deregulation under way in the region. E-commerce has also been developing at a rapid pace, as both the public and private sectors have discovered the clear advantages of doing business on-line and the power of the Internet.

This phenomenon will continue to expand—despite market instability and fluctuations—because the Internet has dramatically changed the way people communicate, do business, seek entertainment, shop, and learn. Growth in this sector is both widespread and immune to outside forces.

The seminar’s cutting-edge topics and eminent speakers will address the huge impact the Internet has had as well as recent advances in telecommunications technology in the region. The seminar will also underscore the commitment of the Government of Chile to bringing the country and the region into the digital age.
