      Canada and United States

The Inter-American Development Bank is accepting applications for 56 delegates to a "Youth Summit" that will be held from March 23 to March 28 in New Orleans during the Bank’s Annual Meeting of its Board of Governors.

The application deadline is January 28, and the selected delegates will be announced by the end of February.

Application forms may be obtained at the following IDB Webpage address: http://www.iadb.org/exr/am2000/youthsummit.htm

Hard copies of the application may be requested and submitted to the IDB country offices.

Electronic application forms may also be obtained and submitted online by visiting the Website of the StarMedia Foundation, the IDB partner in this initiative, at www.starmediafoundation.org

Successful candidates for the delegate positions will participate in a seminar, to be held on March 24 and on March 27, titled "Building Human and Social Capital: The Strategic Importance of Investing in Youth Development and Participation."

Two candidates from each of the 28 Bank member countries in the Western Hemisphere will be selected by a committee comprised of members of the IDB, StarMedia Foundation, and international organizations.

Candidates must be citizens of one of the IDB member countries in the Americas and between the ages of 18 and 30.

Among the qualities being sought in candidates are personal commitment to economic and social change; vision, creativity and determination; participation in youth-led or youth-serving community service; leadership capability; and ability to communicate in English or Spanish.

The delegates to the youth summit will discuss their work - in the areas of technology, health, employment, youth service, and participation and policies - with representatives of youth organizations, nongovernment organizations, governments, the private sector and international organizations. Subsequently they will examine best practices, extract lessons, and draw practical conclusions.
