IDB HIGH TECH INFORMATICS EXHIBIT OPENS IN SANTIAGO ON APRIL 16, WITH FOCUS ON EDUCATION, TRADE, SOCIAL SECTORS, CIVIL SOCIETY Co-founder of Internet to be speaker at workshop, roundtable |

SANTIAGO, CHILE ñ A exhibition demonstrating how to apply the world's leading advances in information technology to improve education, health, economic growth, and the quality of life in Latin America and the Caribbean opens Thursday, April 16, at the CasaPiedra exhibition center in the Chilean capital. Among the speakers at a series of five roundtable discussions and workshops during the three-day exhibition will be John Gage, one of the co-founders of the Internet, who speak at a roundtable discussion on education at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17, and will be available throughout the exhibition. Other roundtables will focus on health, business and trade, government and civil society, and policy and infrastructure modernization of the state. The exhibition, titled "Information and Communications Technology: Strengthening the Hemisphere for the 21st century, " is organized by the Inter-American Development bank as part of its Informatics 2000 Initiative. Ministers from six countries in the fields of education, health, communications, economy, and science and technology are expected to participate in the panels and workshops. President Menem of Argentina and other heads of state as well as other high-level policy-makers are expected to visit the exhibit, which will feature the latest advances in information technology that are being used by government, universities, research institutions, and the private sector, especially small business. The opening roundtable begins at 3 p.m. on Thursday and will focus on informatics technology as applied to business and trade. The session will be chaired by Hugo Fern·ndez Faingold, a member of parliament of Uruguay, and other participants will be Carlos Mladinic, Chilean Minister of Agriculture; Aida Alvarez, head of the Small Business Administration of the United States; and Enrique Fanta, director, Chilean Customs Department Also participating will be PÌo Guerro, president, SEBRAE, Brazil; Francisco Marinotti, president, CIAMPI; Esteban Valenti, Regional Director for Latin America for Uruguay-based TIPS; David A. Rosen, executive director, business consulting services, Bellcore; Argelio Maldonado, IBM; and Rodrigo Alonso, Microsoft. |
