RADIO TALK HOSTS TO BROADCAST FROM IDB ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Discussions in Spanish and English of Western Hemisphere family problems

More than a dozen radio talk show hosts will set up shop at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the Inter-American Development Bank on Oct. 20 to take calls in Spanish and English that will illustrate the scope and depth of domestic violence in the Western Hemisphere.

The broadcasts, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., will be carried to several hundred radio stations during the first day of a two-day conference at the IDB designed to alert the public about the impact of domestic violence in Latin America and the Caribbean and seek strategies and initiatives to prevent it. The broadcasts are expected to reach 25 million listeners.

Senior government officials, social scientists, and prominent personalities will speak at the conference, including U.S. First Lady Hillary Clinton, who is also expected to be interviewed on some of the talk shows.

Among the talk show hosts expected to broadcast from the IDB are Blanquita Cullum, president of the National Association of Talk Show Hosts, whose nationally syndicated show is broadcast from Washington, D.C.; Dr. Joy Browne, of WOR of New York; Doug Stephan and Ellen Ratner of the nationally syndicated program "Good Day USA," and Carlos Ramos of WXDA of Mexico City.

Three Spanish language women talk show hosts who will broadcast are Amalia Gonzales of KTNQ of Los Angeles; Luisa Torres of WIND in Chicago, and Malin Falu of WADO in New York.

The conference is being co-sponsored by the IDB, Pan American Health Organization, Organization of American States, Institute for Civil Society, and ISIS International.

For more information on the talk shows contact Charo Quezada of the IDB at (202) 623-3060.
