FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 18, 1996
A selection of Bolivian paintings and sculptures representing national
aspirations and pride will be on display at the Cultural Center Art Gallery of
the Inter-American Development Bank from November 27 to Jan. 24.
Titled "Between the Past and the Present: Nationalist Tendencies in
Bolivian Art 1925-1950," the show consists of 30 works selected from the
country's National Art Museum as well as other museums and private
collections.
The presentation takes on special meaning for the IDB, given its current
interest in indigenous development issues and the Bank's mandate to support the
social sectors in the development of Latin America.
The roots of some of the changes now being undertaken to give greater
participation by the indigenous population in the destinies of Bolivia can be
found in the nationalist movement that underlies the artistic expressions
exemplified in the exhibit.
The show includes works by Arturo Borda, Cecilio Guzmán de Rojas,
Jorge de la Reza Prudencio, Raúl G. Prada, Marina Núñez del
Prado, Juan Rimsa and Victor Chvatal.
The exhibit is open to the public free of charge from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
Monday through Friday.
The IDB Cultural Center Art Gallery is located at 1300 New York Ave., N.W.,
near Metro Center station.
