In recent years, indigenous movements and organizations in Latin America have significantly increased their importance and influence. Their strengthened political participation has contributed to the definition of new constitutional, legal and institutional reforms, which have had a significant impact on the current Latin American governance models. The emergence of these new structures, and their effects on future democratic prospects for the region, requires a critical assessment, which can benefit greatly from the European perspective and experience.
To deepen understanding of this trend and its emerging issues, SOE and the Indigenous Peoples and Community Development Unit of SDS co-organized seminars and dialogues on “Experiences of Indigenous Governance in Latin America” and work, in collaboration with European research centers, on the program Indigenous Governance: Challenges and Possibilities which increases the visibility of indigenous political and economic governance experiences in Latin America.
